I often tell my students, “if you’re not suffering, you’re not doing it right”, and Nietzsche too would esteem that suffering is necessary to everything that one values. We all come to realize that detachment is a powerful state of being because nothing in this state can touch you, hurt you, sway you in any way, because you simply do not care! Not caring then is placing value on the valuelessness of all things upon which some of the most sturdy of fortresses have been built. Of course, it is already suspect that fortresses would have to be built to keep all impulses for care at bay. There are, of course, other varieties of this, one which I often speak of (though I am not alone in this) is happiness, or the will to happiness. In this scenario what is valued above all is a permanent (not literally people!) state of happiness so that in times of despair or potential despair there is a conscientious transference of energies where what is “lost” is replaced with something else. Some have the uncanny ability to completely lose themselves in any and every new endeavour, others like Kierkegaard’s aesthetic man will move from host to host, eventually left in a state of unavoidable despair as this frenzy leaves one in a state of existential fatigue, and yet others of low sensibility will remain lowly and easily contented. And yet, suffering is the measure of personal investedness, the bridge that binds one to the world and her choices, that breathes life into lifeless, pointless occupations, and makes oneself and all that comprises her world of intractable meaning! Where else would one who has ever lived there want to live?
