I decided to design this course following expressed interest amongst students registered for my course Fight Conformity and Claim Your Autonomy (previously Four Ethics for Life – It seems after taking that course – which expounds four of the most prominent moral philosophical outlooks (Utilitarianism, Kantianism, Ethical Egoism and Virtue Ethics) – students wanted to know what to do with all that knowledge. So, they’d say, “Okay so now I know the Kantian perspective, but is that all there is to it? Do I simply apply the Categorical Imperative?” My answer was usually something like “Exposure to the underpinnings of these moral outlooks is only the start.
